India's Hockey Double at Asian Games 2026: Men Beat Malaysia 5-1, Women End a 44-Year Wait Against China, Both Book LA 2028

For the first time at one Asian Games, India won both hockey golds. The men retained their title with a 5-1 win over Malaysia and two goals from Harmanpreet Singh; the women beat China 1-0 through Lalremsiami for their first gold since Delhi 1982. Both results carry direct Olympic qualification.

Two hockey finals on the same day, two Indian golds, two tickets to Los Angeles. Saturday 3 October was the best day Indian hockey has had in decades, and "India hockey final" searches spiked twice, once for each match.

The men's final: India 5-1 Malaysia

India came into the final as defending champions and played like it. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, continuing his run as the tournament's most reliable drag-flicker, and the team pulled away in the second half to win 5-1. It was India's fifth Asian Games men's title and, notably, the first time the men have defended the crown at consecutive Games.

The women's final: India 1-0 China

The women's match was tighter and far more historic. India's last Asian Games women's hockey gold was at New Delhi in 1982, and China had beaten them in the 2023 semi-final. This time Lalremsiami scored the only goal, the defence held through sustained pressure, and the final whistle ended a 44-year wait. Coach Sjoerd Marijne, back with the team for this cycle, was the focus of much of the post-match coverage; ESPN called it his miracle.

Why the Olympic quota is the bigger prize

Asian Games gold in hockey comes with a direct berth at the next Olympics. In previous cycles India has had to go through qualifying tournaments, and the women missed Paris 2024 after losing in the qualifiers. Both teams now skip that route entirely for Los Angeles 2028. For the women in particular, it is the first time they have qualified for an Olympics by winning a continental title rather than through a qualifier or host-nation route.

A first for Indian hockey

Across every edition of the Asian Games since hockey was added, India had never won both golds at the same Games. The double in Aichi-Nagoya, alongside the cricket and kabaddi doubles, made team sports the story of India's campaign.

What comes next

The men's team heads into the FIH Pro League with their Olympic place secured. The women's team has a longer gap before major competition, which gives the coaching staff time to build depth. Domestic attention turns to the Hockey India League, where several of the final's goalscorers will feature.
