Every year in the first full week of October, a committee walks into a room in Stockholm, and a few minutes later a scientist somewhere is woken by a phone call. Nobel week 2026 begins today. Here is when each prize is announced, in Indian time, and how to follow it.

- Physiology or Medicine: Monday 5 October, 11:30 AM CEST, which is 3:00 PM IST. Announced by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm.

How to watch
Every announcement is streamed live on nobelprize.org and the Nobel Prize YouTube channel, with a press conference and short interviews with committee members afterwards. The laureate telephone interview is usually posted within the hour.
How the prizes are decided
Nominations close on 31 January each year. The committees spend the spring and summer consulting experts and narrowing the list, and the full academy or assembly votes in early October, often the morning of the announcement. Nominations stay secret for 50 years. A prize can be shared by up to three people; the Peace Prize can also go to an organisation.
What winners receive
Each prize is worth 11 million Swedish kronor, about Rs 9 crore at current rates, shared between laureates when there is more than one, plus a gold medal and a diploma. The awards are presented on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, in Stockholm for all prizes except Peace, which is presented in Oslo.
India's Nobel history
Indian citizens have won the prize four times: Rabindranath Tagore (Literature, 1913), C. V. Raman (Physics, 1930), Mother Teresa (Peace, 1979) and Kailash Satyarthi (Peace, 2014). Indian-born laureates who held other citizenships include Har Gobind Khorana, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Amartya Sen, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Abhijit Banerjee.
