Packing for a short trip should not take longer than the trip itself. With a simple plan, most people can fit three to four days of clothes and essentials into one carry-on bag, which saves time at airports and stations and makes getting around much easier.

Check the plan and the weather

Before choosing clothes, look at what you will actually be doing: walking tours, a family function, business meetings or beach time. Then check the weather forecast. These two things tell you exactly what to pack and cut out the "just in case" items.

Build a small, mix-and-match wardrobe

Pick a colour palette of two or three neutrals plus one accent colour, so every top works with every bottom.

  • Tops: one per day, or one fewer if you can re-wear one.
  • Bottoms: two pairs that go with all the tops.
  • One layer: a light jacket, cardigan or shawl, useful for cold trains and air-conditioned buses.
  • One smarter outfit if you have an event.
  • Sleepwear and enough underwear and socks for each day plus one spare.

Limit shoes to two pairs

Shoes take up the most space. Wear the bulkiest pair while travelling and pack one other pair. Comfortable walking shoes are usually the priority.

Roll, fold or use packing cubes

Rolling soft items such as T-shirts and pyjamas saves space and reduces sharp creases. Fold structured items such as shirts and blazers. Packing cubes keep categories together, so you do not have to unpack everything to find one item.

Pack toiletries efficiently

Decant products into small travel bottles and keep liquids in a clear bag if you are flying, following your airline's rules. Many hotels provide basics such as soap and shampoo, so check before you pack them.

Keep a ready-made essentials pouch

A small pouch that stays permanently packed saves time on every trip. Useful items include:

  • Phone charger, cable and a power bank (power banks go in cabin baggage, not checked luggage, when flying).
  • Any medicines you take regularly, plus basic first aid.
  • A copy of your ID and important bookings, stored both on your phone and on paper.
  • Earphones, a pen and a reusable water bottle.

Leave a little space

Leave some room in your bag for anything you buy on the trip. A foldable tote bag weighs almost nothing and gives you extra space on the way home.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I pack for a three-day trip?

Three tops, two bottoms, one layer, two pairs of shoes including the ones you wear, plus sleepwear and underwear. That fits comfortably in a standard carry-on.

Is rolling or folding clothes better?

Rolling works best for soft, casual clothes and saves space. Folding is better for crisp shirts and formal wear. Many people combine both in one bag.

What should always go in hand luggage?

ID, medicines, chargers, power banks, valuables and one change of clothes, in case checked luggage is delayed.

Packing in fifteen minutes

Once you have done it this way a couple of times, packing becomes a short checklist: plan, weather, palette, two pairs of shoes and the pouch that is already packed. Lighter bags make for calmer trips.
