The next big Hindi release after Drishyam 3 is a comedy with a spy-thriller premise, and its trailer has been one of YouTube's trending videos in India for two weeks. Udta Teer opens on Friday 9 October. Here is what to know before you book.

The premise

Ayushmann Khurrana plays Bilal, a Pakistani intelligence agent who loses his memory in an explosion and wakes up convinced he is a member of India's Counter-Terrorism Squad. Sara Ali Khan plays a CTS officer who ends up working alongside him without knowing who he really is. The trailer leans into the comedy of mistaken identity while promising action and a patriotic payoff.

Cast and crew

Beyond the two leads, the cast includes Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Suhail Nayyar, Gulshan Grover, Mukul Dev, Raghubir Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Sandeep Anand, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Smita Tambe. Aakash Kaushik writes and directs in his first feature. The film is presented by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, and produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, with Raunaq Bajaj as co-producer.

Why the date moved

Udta Teer was originally slated for 11 September. The makers pushed it to 9 October, which gives it the second weekend of the Dussehra run-up but also puts it against Drishyam 3's second weekend, a film that has just opened to Rs 177 crore. Trade watchers expect Udta Teer to rely on comedy-loving audiences and smaller centres rather than a blockbuster opening.

Why it is trending now

Promotions began in early September, the trailer landed on 23 September, and Khurrana and Khan have been on a city tour since. With Gandhi Jayanti weekend over, searches have shifted from Drishyam 3 to what releases next, and Udta Teer is the answer.

What to expect

Khurrana's best-known films, Andhadhun, Bala, Dream Girl, are comedies with a twist, and Udta Teer sits in that lane. Early reactions will come from the Thursday night previews, and we will update this page with reviews and the opening-day figure.
