Thursday 8 October brings two very different Netflix releases to India: a cold-water horror series from Canada and a Tamil sports drama fresh from cinemas. Both are trending in their own lanes. Here is what to know about each.

Below is a six-episode series set in a fishing town on the coast of Newfoundland, Canada's easternmost province, where the sea is both livelihood and threat. People begin to vanish, and the town has to decide whether what is taking them is natural. Josh Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a local fisherman at the centre of the mystery; Charlie Heaton, known from Stranger Things, and Mackenzie Davis co-star. Jesse McKeown created the series.
It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 10 September, where the response focused on its atmosphere and restraint rather than jump scares. Hartnett is having an unusual week: Below arrives four days after Verity, in which he co-stars with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, opened at number one in US cinemas.
Mandaadi
Mandaadi is a Tamil sports drama starring Soori, the comedian turned leading man whose last few films have moved him into serious roles. He plays a wrestler from a rural village who returns to the sport after years away, with the family and caste pressures around him as much of the story as the bouts. The film had a theatrical run in September and reaches Netflix on 8 October with subtitles and, in some regions, a Hindi dub.
