Netflix's big Hindi release of the week is a newsroom thriller with a very Indian villain. Reporting Live streams from Friday 9 October, and the trailer, with Parineeti Chopra chasing a story through riverbeds and police stations, has kept the title trending since it dropped.

The story

Chopra plays a television reporter whose ordinary assignment leads her and her cameraman, played by Deven Bhojani, to an illegal sand-mining operation. Sand mafia is the term Indian newspapers use for the networks that dredge river sand without permits, often with political protection, and journalists who report on them have been attacked and killed. The film builds its tension from that reality: the deeper the story goes, the more dangerous it becomes to broadcast.

The cast

Beyond Chopra and Bhojani, the film has Amol Palekar in a rare screen appearance, Adil Hussain and Shekhar Suman. Dhruv Tripathi directs his first feature from his own script. It is Chopra's first lead role since Amar Singh Chamkila in 2024 and her first Netflix original as the lead.

The issue behind it

Illegal sand mining is one of India's largest environmental crimes by volume. River sand is essential to construction, legal supply is restricted, and the gap is filled by unlicensed dredging that erodes riverbanks, lowers water tables and destroys habitats. Several states have tried drone surveillance and online permits; enforcement remains uneven. Reporting Live is fiction, but its premise is drawn directly from reported cases.

When and where

Netflix India, Friday 9 October, 12:30 PM IST, in Hindi with subtitles. It shares the day with Ben Affleck's Animals, Netflix's international release of the week.
