Everyday make-up should make you feel good without taking over your whole morning. The routine below uses a small number of products and takes around ten minutes once you have practised it a few times. Adjust it freely; there is no single right way to wear make-up.
Start with prepared skin
Make-up sits better on moisturised skin. Apply your usual moisturiser and sunscreen and give them a couple of minutes to settle while you do something else, such as brushing your hair.
Even out the skin lightly
For everyday wear, a lightweight option such as a tinted moisturiser, BB cream or a thin layer of foundation is often enough. Apply it with fingers, a sponge or a brush, focusing on the centre of the face and blending outwards. Use a little concealer only where you need it, under the eyes or on blemishes, and tap it in gently. When choosing a shade, test it on your jawline in daylight rather than on your hand under shop lights.
Add a little warmth
A cream or powder blush on the apples of the cheeks brings the face to life. Smile slightly, apply to the rounded part of the cheek and blend towards the temples. Cream products blend easily with fingers and look natural. Many people use the same shade on their lips for a matched look.
Define the brows
Brush your brows upwards with a clean spoolie or an old toothbrush. If you like, fill sparse areas with a pencil or powder close to your natural brow colour, using short, light strokes. A clear or tinted brow gel keeps them in place all day.
Simple eyes
- Curl your lashes if you like the effect.
- Apply one coat of mascara, wiggling the wand at the base of the lashes.
- For extra definition, smudge a brown or black pencil along the upper lash line.
- Kajal on the waterline is a popular option; choose products from reputable brands and replace them regularly.
Finish with lips
A tinted lip balm or a lipstick close to your natural lip colour finishes the look without needing precision. Blot once with a tissue for a softer, longer-lasting finish.
Keep your tools clean
Brushes and sponges collect oil and bacteria. Wash them every week or two with mild soap and let them air-dry. Replace mascara every three months or so and throw away any product that changes smell or texture.
Remove make-up at night
However tired you are, take your make-up off before bed. A gentle cleanser, micellar water or cleansing balm followed by your usual evening routine keeps your skin comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum make-up for a natural look?
Many people manage with just three things: a concealer or tinted moisturiser, mascara and a tinted lip balm. Add blush when you want a little more colour.
How do I make make-up last in humid weather?
Use a light, mattifying moisturiser, keep base layers thin and set the T-zone lightly with powder. Blotting papers during the day remove shine without adding more product.
How often should I clean make-up brushes?
Every one to two weeks for brushes used daily, and sponges more often, since they stay damp and collect bacteria quickly.
Practise it three times
The first attempt will take longer than ten minutes, and that is fine. By the third morning the steps start to feel automatic: prepared skin, a light base, a touch of colour, tidy brows and a quick lip.
